Charge offs on Credit Reports

Charge offs on credit report. How to remove the damage done by a chargeoff on your credit report.

Anyone who sees a charge off on his or her credit report is in pretty deep. Creditors will only declare a debt with their customer to be a charge off on a credit report when that customer's debt to them becomes severely delinquent.

When that happens, that charge off will then be listed on the reports of the credit bureau. This is not good news for the customer. In fact, a charge off is one of the worst items a consumer can find on their credit report.

Why is it so bad? Simple. A charge off on a credit report is like a stain that won't come off: it is permanent. It is a debt that will be written off as uncollectable. It will be written off as bad debt. Even when you get around to paying a charge-off down the line, it will not be removed from your various credit reports. Your credit report will simply state "Paid charge off," which in the eyes of a loan lender or employer, is just as bad.

A charge off on a credit report is there to stay. According to the Fair Credit Reporting Act, a charge off will show up on your credit reports for up to seven years, regardless of whether it is paid or not.

There are rare cases where consumers are able to negotiate the removal of a charge off form a credit report with immediate payment. This is a possibility. But you should still think twice before you make a conscious decision to avoid paying your debts.
